Walton Road Allotments

Welcome to
Walton Road Allotments

Sale, Greater Manchester

The Team
Welcome to Walton Road Allotments Website. We are a medium sized allotment site situated in Sale, Greater Manchester. We have over 50 plots, which are a mixture of full and  half plots.

It is our aim to provide a friendly, communal, safe environment for members, and their children and visitors to our site. To promote gardening as a recreational activity, and to help new gardeners and members of the wider community wherever possible, learn about cultivating produce.

We grow flora, fruit and vegetables, in harmony with the fauna that share our allotment site. The WRAS committee encourages members to conserve rainwater, recycle green waste and advise on the use of organic practices.

Working a Plot

Renting an allotment is incredibly rewarding but it is also hard work.  Before you consider an allotment you need to make sure that you have the time to cultivate and look after your plot.

You need to invest at least 8 hours each week, probably more,  in the growing season for planting, weeding, hoeing and harvesting.  You will also need time to sew, pot on, prepare the ground and plan during the winter and spring months.

After harvesting you will need time to prepare your harvest for eating, freezing, preserving or bottling.  It is amazing how much time this takes.

You also need your own transport as every weed and waste that is not compostable needs to be taken from the site to the tip or your green bin.

You will be expected to keep your plot weed free and you need to cultivate at least 75% of your plot, with the remainder set aside for sheds, greenhouses, composting etc.

If you do not have this amount of time then renting an allotment is probably not for you.  If you do have the time, the rewards are wonderful.

Spring Plant Sale News

Picture
I’d like to thank everyone who helped to make last Saturday’s plant sale a great success; those who donated plants and those who helped to set things up on Friday and Saturday morning.

I was a bit worried that we might not have enough to sell but my fears were unfounded. We filled three tables and sold a good two thirds of the stock.

Ewan brought along an observation hive so that visitors could see our bees and the queen (bee).

You’ll remember that we decided to split the takings 50/50 with a little known charity, The Cornelia de Lange Foundation. A family very close to the site has a daughter who suffers from this rare condition. They came along to the event and explained to some of us the difficulties they faced on a day to day basis. I’m very glad we chose this cause as it is clearly a struggle to raise funds and awareness of this little known condition.

Well, I can now inform you that at the last count we have raised almost £340.00! Not bad when you consider that the average price of a plant was £1.00.

Rhubarb sales were brisk and our thanks to those who allowed us to take some from their plots.  There is a link to some photographs of the event in the "New this Month" section above

Useful Link for Plug Plants

If the thought of growing from seed is daunting then Rocket Gardens may be of interest.  They sell 100% organic plug plants for veg, fruit and herbs.  Check out their website at www.rocketgardens.co.uk

Walton Road Allotment Society

The WRAS has a committee to discuss any problems with you and offer help and suggestions.  But the society is not just about the committee, it is about every member.  Your input is important.
.
The WRAS was set up to gain independence and control of the site from the local authority. This independence means that we are able to respond as a community to the regular site maintenance requirements and to any questions or problems the members may have. This is your Society and the Committee need your support and help to make the site viable and a success. Without the Society the site would revert to the local authority”
